Water Damage Resources

Safety guidance and insurance documentation tips for Houston property owners.

Guides

Emergency safety

  • Avoid entering standing water where electrical hazards may exist.
  • Do not touch energized equipment, cords or outlets in flooded areas.
  • Avoid contact with potentially contaminated floodwater or sewage.
  • Shut off water only when it's safe to access the shutoff.
  • Contact emergency services (911) for any immediate life-threatening hazard.
  • Seek professional guidance for contaminated water and structural damage.

Documenting water damage for insurance

Photograph safely

Take wide and close-up photos and video of affected rooms, the water source, waterlines on walls and damaged belongings — only where it's safe to stand.

Record the timeline

Write down when the damage was discovered, what you saw and the steps you took, such as shutting off water.

Keep records

Save receipts for emergency expenses, and keep notes of every conversation with your insurer and contractors, including names and dates.

Questions to ask your insurer

  • Is this type of water damage covered under my policy?
  • What is my deductible, and are there limits for water damage?
  • Do you need to inspect before work or materials are removed?
  • What documentation do you need from me and from the contractor?

Sudden water damage vs. flooding

Many homeowners policies treat sudden, accidental water damage (like a burst pipe) differently from flooding caused by rising outside water, which is often covered by a separate flood policy. Gradual leaks may be excluded. Coverage and exclusions vary by policy and insurer.

We cannot promise insurance coverage, claim approval or reimbursement. For help with insurance questions, the Texas Department of Insurance offers consumer resources.
